Big Wally – Wallowa Lake Monster
Many reports, including legends of native people about an enormous, manatee-like animal that is up to 15 m long. The elongated lake is 5.6 km long and 1.2 km wide, up to 91 m deep.
Crater Lake in Oregon
Round, beautiful lake in the caldera of Mount Mazuma volcano. The caldera is 655 m deep and formed geologically recently: 7,700 years ago when the volcano collapsed. The lake is 594 m deep – the deepest in the United States.
Fort Rock
Unusual landmark – tufa ring that rises 105 m above the surrounding plain. The diameter of this formation is around 1,360 m.
Pomona Natural Bridge
Beautiful, impressive natural bridge that has formed in sandstone rock. It is 27.4 m wide and only 2.4 m wide.
Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet
Gorgeous movie theatre building in Neo-Baroque style, constructed in 1926. Now it is used for musicals and standup comedies. The theatre is considered to be a haunted place.
Illinois State Capitol
One of the most prominent state capital buildings in the United States. This ornate house was constructed in 1868 and is 110 m tall – taller than the U.S. Capitol. The building has been designed in the French Renaissance style.
Coronado Theatre
Beautiful, very ornate theatre that was built in 1927 and designed by Frederic J. Klein. This unusually splendid building is a pride of the city.
Old Cahokia Courthouse
The oldest existing European structure in Illinois. This wooden building was constructed by the French-Canadians and has served as a courthouse and also – as a house. The house has been almost totally rebuilt and little of the original structure remains.
Fort de Chartres
Partly reconstructed historical fortress. Initially, it was built by the French in 1720 on the bank of the Mississippi River. Fort served as the administrative center. It was rebuilt in the 1750ies. The stone magazine (1750ies) is considered to be one of the oldest stone buildings in Illinois.
Starved Rock
Starved Rock is a prominent, some 30 m tall cliff at Illinois River. In the small side valleys have formed 18 beautiful canyons in sandstone rocks.
