Nature enthusiasts in Latvia love to find and list even the smallest natural monuments. And Riežupe Waterfall is quite small – but we love it anyway!
This waterfall has formed on the Middle Devonian dolostone of Pļaviņas Stage.
In earlier times there was a more impressive, more than 2 m high waterfall some hundreds of meters above the river (see the image in 1). Unfortunately, it was blown up for the mining of dolostone in the 1950ies.
There are several more small steps in Riežupe River above and below this waterfall, and nearby are two more small waterfalls – Veldze Waterfall and the charming Trejrumbina.
