In detail
The Loja River is one of the smaller streams within Gauja National Park. It winds through picturesque Devonian sandstone canyons, eventually flowing into the Gauja River.
Within this canyon, there are at least three smaller waterfalls. However, one stands out: occasionally, it forms a stream that leaps directly into the Loja River. This particular waterfall is quite small, measuring only 0.1 to 0.3 meters wide and approximately 2.3 to 2.5 meters high. It flows consistently throughout the year.
The stream responsible for this waterfall appears to be relatively recent. It might be the outflow of a reclamation ditch created before the 1990s. Had it been an older, natural stream, it would have gradually eroded the fairly fragile sandstone, resulting in a canyon without such a vertical leap of water over the cliff face.
