Wollemi pine stands

Wollemia population after the fires in January 2020

The three only existing populations of Wollemia nobilis pine in deep, inaccessible gorges with less than 100 Wollemi pines remaining. This tree was thought to be extinct 150 million years ago until it was discovered not far from Sydney in 1994.

Riversleigh lies within the traditional country of the Waanyi Aboriginal people.

Naracoorte Caves

Group of 28 caves that contain remnants of 99 species of mammals plus remnants of other kinds of animals. Exceptionally well preserved remains of extinct animals range in size from small frogs to extinct giant marsupials.

Nilpena Ediacaran Fossil Site

The world’s richest find of Ediacaran fossils, contains unique fossils of extremely ancient soft-bodied animals who lived 630 – 542 million years ago. Geological period was named after the nearby site – Ediacara.

Ala-Tey burial ground

Burial mound from Xiongnu period from the 2nd century BC – 1st century AD. Here are very rich, unlooted burials of Huns that were created at the period when this culture started the Great Migration and arrived here from some region in Northern China. The burial mound is endangered by the flooding due to hydropower plant and there are on-going salvage excavations to extract the information before it is lost.

Terezin burial ground

Burial mound from the 2nd century BC – 1st century AD. Here have been made very interesting finds of Hun culture including a body of a partly mummified woman with rich garments and jewelry including a belt buckle with has been nicknamed “Natasha’s iPhone” due to its similarity to a phone case.
